Abstract
Objective: To analyze in a critical – comparative way the sources of stress and the styles of coping of aged people living in their homes against those who live in public or private geriatric institutions. Methodology: The steps of the descriptive – comparative design were followed. The General Data Questionnaire, drawn up by the authors, and the Questionnaire of Styles of Coping by Lazarus and Folkman were administered to 300 aged people of which 150 lived in their homes and 150 in geriatric institutions. Results: The living context in the aged adult is one of the factors which intervene in determining the sources of stress and the styles of coping which they use in the face of vital stressful occurrences. Discussion: The data of this investigation coincide with other studies and adds empirical evidence with regard to the role of the living context in sources of stress in the aged person.
