COMPARING THE EFFICACY OF COGNITIVE-BEHAVIOURAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL THERAPY IN GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER
For the therapy of generalized anxiety disorder both psychosocial and pharmacological treatments are offered. To date, a number of studies investigated the efficacy of both conditions. The present paper summarizes the methods and results of two meta-analyses investigating the comparative efficacy and attrition rates for both treatments. So far, it seems that both therapy approaches are equivalent in efficacy but psychosocial therapies can be recommended because of the better tolerance. However, more research is urgently needed for generalizable conclusions. In addition, the evaluation of new developments in psychosocial therapies is a matter of interest.
