Abstract
The present paper aims to verify the consumption of alcohol among students between ten and thirteen years old of elementary education at public and private schools in a city in Southern Brazil. 710 students were questioned about sociodemographic data, family habits and alcohol use. We found that 62.8% of participants had tried alcohol, 45.3% had consumed alcohol in the past 30 days and 19,4% had been drunk. Alcohol consumption among the young people was associated with age, tobacco use, and the variables: being the victim of violence from parents, the consumption of alcoholic beverages by these and family dialogue. We came to the conclusion that the consumption of alcohol among the young people is associated with family habits, age, and tobacco use.
