IMPACT ON PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH OF INTERNET AND MOBILE PHONE ABUSE IN A SPANISH SAMPLE OF SECONDARY STUDENTS

Abstract
The study analyzes excessive use of internet and mobile phone in adolescents, and its impact on health. The sample consists of 357 secondary school students. Data gathering was carried out with the Internet Overuse Scale, the Cell phone Overuse Scale, the BDI questionnaire for assessing depression and the STAI Questionnaire on State-Trait Anxiety. The results showed that 11.48% of the participants had dependence on Internet and 6.72% had dependence on mobile phones, and that girls had a more problematic use. The clinical use of both technologies is related to depression, anxiety and other unhealthy behaviors. All these findings support the relevance of early detection and intervention.
