SOCIAL NEGATIVITY AND OBESITY: ROLE OF NEGATIVE AFFECTIVITY

Abstract
Interpersonal social exchanges have been mainly studied as a protector factor, however, little attention has been paid to the potential detrimental effects they may have on health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the direct association between social negativity and obesity, and whether this association is mediated by a latent factor of negative affectivity indexed by psychological stress and depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that there is an association between social negativity and obesity, but this association is fully mediated by negative affectivity. These results highlight the role that psychological stress, and depressive symptoms have both in obesity comprehension, as well as the importance of studying the impact of social negativity on health.
