Abstract
Stone is an important element of ancient gardening, and stone elements are essential to traditional Chinese culture. Focusing on the main urban parks in Beijing, China, this paper attempts to identify how public aesthetic preference is affected by traditional cultural elements in different styles through field investigation. From the angles of stone selection and artistic landscaping, the author analyzed the characteristics of stone landscape in parks. Then, the scenic beauty estimation (SBE) was performed to study the aesthetic preference of two groups of subjects for stone landscape pictures of different styles. The results show that the aesthetic preference of the professional group is affected by artistic modeling, formal beauty and spatial layout of stone landscape, while that of the non-professional group is affected by the overall styling, artistic coordination and cultural artistic conception of stone landscape; both groups prefer the rockery using traditional piling technique and rock scenery with unique texture and shape. This paper provides a reference for creating landscape architecture and stone landscape with Chinese characteristics
