CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND LEARNING ANXIETY OF ENGLISH LEARNERS

Abstract
This paper systematically studies the intrinsic link between academic achievement and learning anxiety of English learners, aiming to improve their learning effect and alleviate their anxiety in learning. The research data were collected through a questionnaire survey in a senior high school of Wuhan, China. The survey mainly focuses on the learning anxiety and self-efficacy of English learners. Then, the survey data were analysed to identify the possible causes of learning anxiety. The results show that the students are generally anxious in the process of English learning; the leading causes of the anxiety include frequency English tests and the worry of unsatisfactory test results; the anxiety of a learner may intensify, if he/she receives negative evaluation from teachers, parents or classmates; the academic achievement is positively correlated with test anxiety and negative evaluation anxiety, and negatively with communication apprehension, anxiety in English class, and fear of failure; the anxiety of English learners can be reduced by enhancing their self-efficacy, leading to a better academic achievement. The research findings provide new supports for improving the anxiety of English learners and their academic achievement.
