Emotional intelligence and compassion fatigue in therapists
Abstract
The main objective of this study is providing information on the influence of emotional intelligence as a protective factor against compassion fatigue in therapists. The sample was composed of 158 Argentine psychologists and psychiatrists, working in the clinical area. The participants completed a sociodemographic characteristics test, Trait MetaMood Scale (TMMS-24), the Empathy Exhaustion Scale (ESAPE) and dimensions of perspective taking and empathic concern of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). The data found by multiple linear regression analysis reveals that emotional intelligence is related to compassion fatigue, the dimensions of attention, and emotional repair proving to be especially important in the explained proportion of variance in vulnerability and professional involvement.
