Psychotherapy in an Emerging World. The Landscape of Latin America

Abstract
Psychotherapy is one of the most emblematic products of the twentieth century's scientific development. It took shape in early 1900 in Central Europe in the work of Freud and extended in its early stages within the European continent and the United States. It was, therefore, a distinctly Western product that managed to expand universally throughout the last century. In Latin America, it found fertile ground almost from its beginnings. The culture of Latin American society (especially in urban areas) quickly absorbed this discipline in its various expressions. Both the different theoretical conceptions and the multiple devices and technical formats are very well represented throughout the continent.
