Evaluation of cognitive behavioral intervention and psychoeducation as strategies to support informal caregivers of psychiatric patients
Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a cognitive-behavioral intervention (CBI) and psychoeducation (PE) on reducing the perceived overload (SCP), the symptoms associated with stress (SAE) and the development of ways of coping (MA) in 98 informal primary caregivers (IPC) of psychiatric patients. Psychological treatment was given to two groups of caregivers, using a before and after design: PE (n = 54) or ICC (n = 44). The intragroup analysis indicates that the SCP and SAE are significantly reduced with the ICC and MA increase with PE, whereas the effect size is medium in both cases (d = 0.4). The combination of the ICC and the EP could mean a greater reduction in stress levels in this population.
