IMPACTS OF GREEN DEVELOPMENT ON THE HAPPINESS OF CHINESE RESIDENTS
Abstract
The continued economic growth in China has led to the deterioration of the ecological environment, which negatively affects the happiness of Chinese residents. The green development offers a solution to this problem. To reveal the exact impacts of green development on residents’ happiness, this paper examines the demographic indices, namely, gender, health status, marital status and income, that affect the residents’ happiness, satisfaction with green development and evaluation of government work on green development through questionnaire survey and regression analysis. Taking the four indices as control variables, the author investigated how residents’ happiness changes with their satisfaction of the overall situation and three dimensions of green development. The results show that the residents’ happiness increases with their satisfaction degree of the overall situation of green development; the residents’ happiness has little to do with the satisfaction of the acoustic environment, but close correlations with the satisfaction of the air and water and that of greening and park; the government work on green development greatly improves residents’ happiness. The research findings can guide the government on how to set out green development policies.
