Risk Variables for the Transmission of HIV: Comparative analysis, based on gender, among wixaritari indigenous and mixed race mexican adolescents


Abstract
The current study was conducted to carry outa comparative analysis, based on gender, considering severalrisk variables for the transmission of VIH amongst wixaritariindigenous and mixed race Mexicans adolescents.A sample of 300 students between 14 to 19 years old wasselected, of which 107 were wixaritari indigenous and 193 weremixed race from the north of Jalisco, Mexico. Assessed variableswere knowledge about HIV/STI, locus of control for the HIVinfection, concern about HIV/STI and attitudes towards condomuse.Statistically significant differences based on gender werefound, in the variables internal locus of control, attitudes towardscondom use and knowledge about HIV/STI. We did not finddifferences in the variable concern about HIV/STI.Wixaritari indigenous adolescents, regardless of gender,are exposed to a higher level of risk of HIV infection than mixedrace adolescents. It is necessary to keep on researching aboutother variables that could intervene in preventive behavior inindigenous population, and make HIV prevention programssuitable for the population.
