Self-concept in School Children: Child Maltreatment's role
Abstract
In the present study we assess and compareself-concept in maltreated children and in children without thischaracteristic. Sample: 185 Argentinean school children 7 to 12year-old (91 victims of maltreatment and 94 children not subjectedto maltreatment). Assessment instrument: Cuestionario deAutoconcepto para niños (Valdéz Medina, 1994). We observedthat in real self-concept maltreated children felt significantlymore romantic, restless, nice and unruly, compared to childrenwithout those problems. In ideal self-concept maltreated childrenfelt significantly more restless and nice than their peers. Resultswill be a contribution for the design of programs to promote selfconceptin children under risk of maltreatment.
