CORRELATION AMONG MENTAL HEALTH, WORK STRESS AND JOB BURNOUT OF RURAL TEACHERS

Abstract
The rural-urban gap in education is a universal problem. There is a severe lack of rural teachers in many countries. Currently, most rural teachers in China are working under immense work pressure, which greatly affects their mental health. This paper aims to identify the correlation among mental health, work stress and job burnout of rural teachers, laying the basis for improving their mental health. Based on psychological capital (PsyCap) model, the author carried out a questionnaire survey in a rural primary school of southeastern China’s Jiangxi Province. The survey data were analyzed on the Matlab to disclose how demographic variables of rural teachers, e.g. gender, age and educational background, affect the mental health, work stress and job burnout of the rural teachers, and to identify the correlation among the three factors. The results show that these demographic variables have great impacts on the mental health, work stress and job burnout of rural teachers; the mental health is negatively correlated with work stress and job burnout. This research provides theoretical parameters and data support for the management of rural teachers, and promotes the development of rural education in China
