PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS AND PREFERENCES OF STUDENTS UNDER DIFFERENT ENGLISH TEACHING STYLES


Abstract
The teaching style of English varies from teacher to teacher, and exerts an important impact on the psychology of students. This paper aims to identify the psychological barriers and preference of students under different English teaching styles. Four different teaching styles were considered, including humorous and lively style, rigorous and logic style, caring and sharing style, and innovative and exploratory style. The author conducted a questionnaire survey was carried out among 1,500 college students in a university of Hubei, China, and analyzed the collected data in multiple dimensions. The results show that the relationship between teaching style and the mental health of students is mediated by the interest, satisfaction and attitude of students in English learning; innovative and exploration is the most common teaching style of college English teachers, followed in turn by caring and sharing, rigorous and logic, and humorous and lively; all four teaching styles can promote the mental health of college students; among them, the humorous and lively style, and the caring and sharing style have the greater promoting effects. The research results shed light on the reform of English curriculum and mental health education in colleges.
