Prevalence of Problematic Internet Use in a Sample of Colombian Adolescents
Abstract
We investigated the prevalence of problematic internet use (PIU) in a sample of Colombian adolescents and its association with sociodemographic variables such as sex, age, level of education, and socioeconomic status. We applied the internet addiction test (IAT), created by Young (1998), adapted to a Colombian university sample by Puerta-Cortés and Carbonell (2013), to a sample of 117 students aged between 12 and 18 years (63.2% females). Findings suggest that 84.6% exhibited usual internet use, 14.5% showed problematic use, and 0.9% represented cases of internet addiction.
